Background Information

Tokyo is an ever-evolving city and most districts have changed with the times. Yanaka, however, is one of the few areas in the city where you can feel like you have slipped back to a simpler time.

Not too far from Ueno Park, and just a short walk from either Nippori Station or Sendagi Station, the Yanaka Ginza shopping district, which serves as a market to the many residents that live in the area – from bakers to barbers, to butchers and confectionery shops – offers a glimpse into life from a number of decades ago.

Getting There

Yanaka can be accessed from either Nippori Station (JR Yamanote Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line and Keisei Line) or Sendagi Station (Chiyoda Line). Both Stations are accessible.

Accessibility

Approaching Yanaka Ginza, the main shopping street of Yanaka, from Nippori station can be a bit difficult as it requires going up a hill, and then back down the other side of the hill. The common route involves using Yuyakedandan stairs that look over Yanaka Ginza.

There is a street that branches off to the left of the stairs (when coming from Nippori Station) that has no steps but is still fairly steep and possibly difficult for those with mobility challenges.  Coming from Sendagi Station is much flatter.

Yanaka Ginza has many stores that are accessible to wheelchair users compared to many other areas of Tokyo. However, while there are no steps at many of the stores, they can be cramped and difficult to shop in.

The best option for accessible toilets are likely found at the train stations.

Conclusion

While the shopping street can be accessed from either Nippori Station or Sendagi Station, the path from Sendagi Station is much easier. The shopping at Yanaka Ginza not only offers a fun trip into Japan’s recent past, but also a quieter atmosphere than other parts of Tokyo and can be a great place to relax during your trip.
